Kerala Becomes First State in India to Achieve Total Primary Education

Kerala, the tiny state in the southern most tip of India which is the first state in India that attained total literacy is all set to achieve another honor in education. Soon, i.e on the 19th of June 2015 the state is going to be declared as the first state in India with 100% primary education..!

'Athulyam' the project that commenced about a year ago by the Kerala State Literacy Mission is becoming fruitful by this achievement. Elaborate arrangements are made for 2,38,569 people to write the exam on June 7th in 6613 examination centers. Out of this 200 people will write in Kannada section and 3659 will write in Tamil section. Those who are writing the 4th class primary examination also include 141 prison inmates from different jails in the state.

The valuation of papers will be completed on 9th and 10th and the 'total Primary education' announcement will be made on June 19th which is the birthday of P N Panicker (the father of library movement in Kerala) which is also observed as the 'Reading Day'. Official declaration will be made later.

Making all people in a state to accomplish complete primary education is not an easy task. It is a remarkable achievement. A worthy reason for all Malayalees to feel proud of and rejoice. To facilitate (sometimes with requests, motivations or with compulsion) the total population in the state to complete the 4th class was a Himalayan task. It is made possible thanks to the collective efforts of the various departments of the government, officials, volunteers, NGOs and friendly associations, etc. under the directorship of Kerala state Saksharatha Mission. It shows the dedication and perseverance of Keralites to complete a service-oriented job with certain determination.

Congratulations to one and all who played some role in this great mission.

Kerala State Digital Collaborative E- Text Books website

On the occasion of celebrating Kerala UDF Government's fourth successful year, the Chief Minister Oommen Chandy inaugurated 'the Digital Collaborative multi-media E-Text Book's in Schools' which is a very novel and innovative move that will be a milestone decision to improve further the standard of learning to a higher level.

According to the CM this is the first time in the entire country a state government introducing digital collaborative eBooks for the school students. This facility will be set in motion in all the government run schools in the state of Kerala (in Kerala majority of schools have broadband internet facility) during this academic year itself. This venture is to be implemented by the Kerala Government's Department of General Education, IT@School.

The digital eText Books would be made available in smart phones and computers. Through this scheme, the original class text books would be scanned and uploaded. There are some 'marked spots' on the online pages, where detailed explanation from hundreds of subject experts / specialist are given in audio and video formats. A student can click this mark to get a collaborative stuff related to the particular topic.

This digital School Text Books are available in the Official Portal of the Education department IT at School:

Finally the Kerala Government succumbs to the 'Anti-Liquor campaigners: Liquor ban begins gradually.

Finally Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and the Excise Minister K. Babu who were adamant in their efforts to re-open the 420 closed bars in the state for hygiene and sub quality reasons, were forced to give-up their stand unable to withstand the anti-liquor campaign of KPCC President V.M Sudheeran getting the full support of the Christian and Muslim Communities and the women beyond party and communal lines.

Though all preach and pass statements against the use of liquor and drugs specially by the younger generations, only some show guts to stop this evil which is one of the main reasons for many crimes and family disputes.

The CM in a press statement made it clear that 'all bars in the state hotels below 5 star status' will be closed soon. And the government is planning for a total prohibition in the state within 10 years from now.

Though many people welcome this move happily, there is anxiety on the other side. Like most government mechanisms that fail in implementing government decisions, many people opine that this will also give rise to chances of corruption through illicit brewing and making country-made liquor and flow of duplicate spirit based drinks from other states.

It will be very difficult for those who are habituated to booze (as Kerala is one of the states in India to consume more alcohol in India) to give up the habit immediately, but this will show great change in God's Own Country in the years to come...!

Debate: Whether Liquor should be Totally Banned in Kerala?

The battle between the supporters of liquor mafia and those against it in Kerala aka God's own country which started some months ago, is increasing day-by-day and the debate is becoming more serious with more people and communities joining the 'anti-liquor' crusade each day.

From the beginning, the Kerala Pradesh Congress Chief V.M Sudheeran was against the renewal of the bars that are closed. He has been advocating for a step-by-step of liquor ban in Kerala.

But the Chief minister Oommen Chandy who was strongly backing the excise minister K. Babu who wanted to re-open the closed bars, is slowly withdrawing as more and more partners of the UDF including the Kerala Congress (M) and the IUML have openly supported the PCC chief's stand for a total and permanant prohibition in the state.

The Catholic Church which is very prominent in Kerala has also raised its voice for total ban of liquor in Kerala.

Kerala's Un-Aided (Private) CBSE Teachers paid very poor salaries. Shocking injustice...!

The findings and revalations by leading Malayalam News channel Asianet News on the plight of most Private Un-aided teachers working in the rich and famous CBSE Schools in the state is really shocking. Most poor but highly qualified teachers working in the rich and reputed CBSE Schools are paid very mean and humiliating salaries by the managements.

Kerala State which is known as 'God's own country' is treating 'Teachers' who are considered next to god in purannas. Asianet news investigation has revealed the malafied activities and attitudes of the School and College Managements who are just like butchers collecting huge fees and donations from the parents of the students and paying very little to the teachers who bring fame and name to the institutions.

The funniest fact is that even missionary schools are no different from the individual managements that run educational institutions as an easy business for multiplying one's investment in short time. Both the left and right wing governments hold unholy nexus with these managements and fear to take any action against them or bring some policies in this aspect.

Ironically, The average wage for a daily laborer is about Rs. 700/- and a Post Graduate Teacher is about Rs.100/- or even lesser. Many teachers feel ashamed to tell these facts and the managements take this as an opportunity to take undue advantage of their poor  plight.

Kudos to Asianet for bringing to light such noble hidden issues which other news channels may hesitate for many reasons...!!!
