K-FON (Kerala Fibre Optic Network) Project to provide free internet to the poor

If Kerala government's ambitious K FON project to provide 'free high speed internet' to the poor is set in motion in December 2020, as announced by the chief minister today, Kerala would set another record of becoming the first state in India to give free hi-speed internet to the economically backward sections of the state.

By declaring internet as a fundamental right of the citizen, Kerala has set a record in the national level to become the first state in the country to do so. Now by giving quality internet free of cost to the poor and at low price to the others, the state is aiming to become the first state in the country. To attain this object, the government of Kerala launched their coveted Rs. 1,500 crore project, Kerala Fibre Optic Network (K-FON) in 2019.

The K-FON project is being implemented in the state by the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) and the Kerala State IT Infrastructure Limited (KSITIL). The government thinks that the project, once executed would be a great boost for the overall development of the state. It is expected that all educational institutions, hospitals, government offices etc can be brought under internet connectivity through this innovative project.

Even though most people in the state consider this as a bold and beneficial enterprise, there are many on the other side who doubt in the credibility, capability and genuineness of the government in implementing such scheme properly. Because it is clearly evident that every action the government performs is linked with some corruption or favoritism and it ends up as a failure. The recent implementation of BevQ app and the miserable failure of it is a solid and latest example of the government.

Some people have already started expressing their opinions that the chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who was strongly opposing the introduction of computer and information technology during his career as a CPI(M) leader, has taken the IT portfolio along with the home ministry even though he does not have any special knowledge or skill in this particular subject. There are allegations that Pinarayi Vijayan kept the IT portfolio to help his daughter Thayikkandiyil Veena who is the owner of some IT firms such as EXALOGIC SOLUTIONS PRIVATE LIMITED (OPC) in BANGALORE. Many people are of the opinion that Even K-FON project will end up in some huge scams involving many CPI(M) party men..!
