India Census 2027: How to Fill the Census Form Online? Complete Step-by-Step Guide

India Census 2027: How Families Can Fill the Census Form Online from home? Complete Step-by-Step Guide

India is all set for a historic and technologically advanced Census exercise in 2027. The last Census in India was conducted in 2011. Although the next Census was originally scheduled for 2021, it could not take place due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the nationwide disruptions that followed.

Now, the Government of India has officially launched Census 2027, and for the first time in the history of the Indian Census, citizens are being given the opportunity to complete the Census details online through a Self-Enumeration system.

This digital initiative is part of India’s broader Digital India mission and is expected to make the Census process faster, easier, and more accurate.

What Is New in Census 2027?

Census 2027 introduces several major changes compared to previous Census exercises:

  • The Census process is becoming fully digital.

  • Families can submit details online by themselves.

  • Self-enumeration can be done through a dedicated online portal.

  • Data submitted online will later be verified by Census officials during house visits.

  • Citizens will receive a unique Self-Enumeration ID after successful submission.

  • The process reduces paperwork and saves time for both families and Census staff.

However, self-enumeration is optional. Families who do not complete the process online will still be visited by Census enumerators in the traditional door-to-door manner.

Official Self-Enumeration Website

Families can complete the Census online through the official portal:

Self Enumeration Portal

Step-by-Step Guide to Fill Census 2027 Online

Step 1: Open the Official Portal

Visit the official Census self-enumeration website:

https://se.census.gov.in/

Step 2: Select Your State

After opening the portal:

  • Select your State or Union Territory.

  • Enter the Captcha code shown on the screen.

  • Proceed to login or registration.

Please note that the self-enumeration period is different for each state. In some states, the online submission period has already ended. However, states like Kerala and Tamil Nadu still have upcoming schedules for self-enumeration.

Step 3: Register Using Mobile Number

  • Enter your mobile number.

  • Verify it through OTP.

  • Create your login credentials.

Important:
One mobile number can generally be used for one family registration.

Step 4: Choose Language

The portal allows users to choose from multiple Indian languages for filling the form.

Choose the language carefully because it may not be changeable later.

Step 5: Fill House Details

You will need to provide details such as:

  • House address

  • Type of building

  • Number of rooms

  • Availability of electricity

  • Drinking water source

  • Toilet facility

  • Internet connection

  • Household assets

Step 6: Enter Family Details

Provide details of all family members including:

  • Name

  • Age

  • Gender

  • Educational qualification

  • Occupation

  • Relationship to head of family

  • Mother tongue and other demographic details

Step 7: Mark Location on Digital Map

Users may also need to mark the exact location of their house on the digital map provided in the portal.

Using a laptop or desktop computer is recommended for easier map marking.

Step 8: Review and Submit

Before final submission:

  • Carefully verify all details entered.

  • Make corrections if necessary.

  • Once finally submitted, editing may not be allowed.

After successful submission, the system generates a unique Self-Enumeration ID (SE ID).

Keep this ID safely.

What Happens After Online Submission?

Even after online submission, Census officials will later visit homes physically for verification purposes.

The officials will verify the submitted details and approve the online entries after checking the required particulars.

Families only need to show their Self-Enumeration ID during the verification visit.

Self-Enumeration Period

The online self-enumeration facility remains open only for a limited period before the door-to-door enumeration begins in each state.

For Kerala, reports indicate that the self-enumeration period is expected from June 16 to June 30, 2026, followed by house visits by Census officials from July onwards.

Citizens are advised to regularly check the official portal for the exact dates applicable to their state.

Why Census Is Important

The Census is one of the most important national exercises conducted by the Government of India.

The data collected through the Census helps the government in:

  • Planning welfare schemes

  • Infrastructure development

  • Allocation of resources

  • Educational and healthcare planning

  • Population statistics

  • Economic and social policy formulation

Accurate participation by every family is therefore extremely important.

Final Words

Census 2027 marks a major transformation in India’s population data collection system. The introduction of digital self-enumeration gives citizens a convenient opportunity to complete the process from home itself.

Families should make use of the online facility during the announced dates for their respective states and ensure that all details are entered accurately.

After online submission, officials will still visit homes for verification and approval of the submitted data.

Citizens are encouraged to cooperate fully with the Census process and contribute towards building accurate national data for the future development of India.
