Vaccine for coronavirus 'Oxford Covishield' to cost less than Rs.1000 per shot

Following 2 phases of successful clinical trials of Oxford-Astrazenca's covid-19 vaccine, Pune-based Serum Institute of India has already commenced manufacturing millions of doses of covaccine vaccine named as 'Covishieldto meet the urgent need to get protection against corona virus pandemic which has been creating panic among the people

In an interview with IANS, the CEO of Serum Institute of India (SII) Adar Poonawalla, stated that as per the arrangements with their partner global drug manufacturing company AstraZeneca, SII will be manufacturing about one billion doses of Covishield vaccine within one year for the domestic use of India as well as other developing countries.

"Though the 3rd Phase of clinical trials are expected to begin in India around August 2020 in which we plan to cover around 4000-5000 patients, We have already started producing immediately a few millions of doses at a personal risk" Poonawalla said. "Based on the success of the trials, we are expecting to launch it by the end of this year. I believe by the first quarter of the next year it will start reaching the masses in the country", Poonawalla added.

To a question about the price of the vaccine, the CEO of Serum Institute of India said that it is too early to say the exact cost, but told that the price per 5 ml vaccine vial will be below INR 1,000 in the initial stage.

All people of the country are eagerly keeping their eyes on the progress of the researches and medical trials and the successful working of this vaccine to prevent the dreaded covid-19 epidemic which has already claimed 31,000 lives and affected about 1,300,000 people as of today... and still on the rampage!
