The Shameful Undermining of the Election Commission of India

For decades, the Election Commission of India (ECI) stood as a proud, constitutionally empowered sentinel, safeguarding the world's largest democracy—its independence and impartiality armoured by both statute and the confidence of the people.

The Golden Era: When the ECI Was a True Watchdog

Revered as a body almost on par with the Supreme Court, the ECI earned widespread trust—particularly under Chief Election Commissioner T.N. Seshan. His tenure epitomized transparency and firmness. Voter rolls were pruned, electoral codes enforced, and political interference curbed. Those were years when the Commission was seen not as a rubber stamp, but as democracy’s gatekeeper.

Until recently, the salary of the Chief Election Commissioner matched that of the Chief Justice of India (CJI)—a symbolic gesture affirming parity and safeguarding independence. The three-member selection committee that chose the CEC included the 'Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition (LoP), and the CJI'—striking a delicate, balanced mechanism.

 The Beginning of Erosion: The 2023 Legal Overhaul

That changed dramatically in 2023, with the passage of the 'Chief Election Commissioner and Other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Act, 2023'. This new law:

* Replaced the 1991 act under which CECs drew the salary of a Supreme Court Judge.

* Relegated them to the salary scale equivalent to a 'Cabinet Secretary', a bureaucratic ranking that, critics argue, weakens the prestige and autonomy of the office. 

* Stripped out the 'CJI from the selection committee', replacing that role with a 'Union Cabinet Minister nominated by the PM', thereby consolidating government dominance over appointments.

This transformation was not merely administrative—it struck at the heart of the Commission’s independence. 

The 2025 Breaking Point: Appointment of Gyanesh Kumar

On February 19, 2025, following the new act’s framework, Gyanesh Kumar—a retired IAS officer—was appointed as the 26th Chief Election Commissioner by a three-member panel comprising /PM Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and LoP Rahul Gandhi'. Despite Rahul Gandhi’s strong objections, the appointment proceeded (as 2 members supported and 1 member opposed).

The selection drew sharp criticism. The opposition impugned the very structure of the law under which the appointment was made, claiming it violated the Supreme Court’s March 2023 judgment. The Court had mandated a selection committee including the CJI, pending Parliament’s enactment of a law. 

The Aftermath: Democracy at Risk?

Recently, Rahul Gandhi held a public presentation, complete with PowerPoint slides and evidence, alleging that the ECI had been complicit in mass rigging of the /2024 parliamentary elections'. His accusations were explosive—not only were they detailed, but his presentation went viral, prompting widespread concern and the dawning realisation among citizens. Many began to wonder aloud whether the Government had reshaped the selection process to install a pliant CEC, shielding electoral wrongdoing.

When the ECI—through the new Chief Election Commissioner—declared it would not investigate these grave charges, the world watched in disbelief. That reticence turned to scorn. The Commission’s prestige, already battered, took a further blow:

Public sentiment turned satirical: some suspect the ECI has become nothing more than “a spokesperson for the BJP.”

Others say it now functions as “another ally in the NDA.”

The irony is staggering: the very body meant to be neutral is being lampooned as partisan.

Reflection: Democracy’s Defeat?

Once a linchpin of fair democracy, the ECI’s transformation is deeply troubling:

1. Loss of symbolism—the downgrade from SC Judge to Cabinet Secretary is more than fiscal. It signals a shift in values and priorities.

2. Appointment rigging—by excluding judicial balance from the selection process, independence becomes harder to claim credibly.

3. Erosion of trust—when credible accusations are brushed off without investigation, the institutional respect fades fast.

For citizens, the message is clear: if the ECI cannot guarantee impartiality, what safeguard remains between free will and state power? And all eyes are eagerly waiting to see the outcome of the impeachment motion all the opposition parties are planning to move against the CEC!

Rising Cruelty Against Christians in India by the Hindutva extremists!

In recent years, India has witnessed a disturbing surge in violence against Christians, with the most alarming incidents reported from BJP-ruled northern states such as Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand and Orissa. Churches have been attacked, prayer meetings disrupted, and Catholic Priests, Nuns and Christian Pastors and believers falsely accused of “forced conversions” under draconian anti-conversion laws.

Rights groups and independent reports highlight that these acts are often carried out by extremist hindutva groups emboldened by political patronage and a climate of impunity. Victims, instead of receiving protection, frequently face harassment from police and other authorities. This growing hostility not only violates the constitutional right to freedom of religion but also undermines India’s democratic and pluralistic traditions.

Though small in number, the contribution of the Christian community to the all-round development of the country is immense—particularly in the social, educational, and medical fields. The fanatics in the northern states may not be aware (as they are mostly illitrate) that the Christians have always exhibited patriotism and deep love for the nation. Many regressive practices such as untouchability, sati, caste discrimination, human sacrifices, and even the denial of the right to wear clothes by the backward castes were challenged and abolished largely due to the influence and intervention of Christian missionaries. Many Indian languages owe their written scripts to missionaries—often foreign missionaries—who worked tirelessly to promote literacy and education.

The Bishop of the Shamshabad Catholic Diocese, Mar Prince Anthony Panengadan, recently released an open letter to the Indian authorities titled “We are Indians, We are Christians”—a heartfelt reminder of the community’s rightful place in the nation on the eve of the 78th Independence Day Celebrations.

As ardent Christians born and brought up in India, I(we) solemnly and boldly affirm:

The recent Parliament elections in Kerala resulted in a significant triumph for the United Democratic Front (UDF), which secured 18 out of 20 seats. 1 seat was won by BJP candidate Suresh Gopi in Thrissur and just 1 seat only was won by an LDF candidate. As the saying goes, "success has many fathers, but failure is an orphan" there are many claiming credit for the results! In fact the main person who helped the landslide victory for UDF is none other than than Pinarayi Vijayan, the chief minister of kerala and his CPI(M) party only. Yes, the overwhelming victory of UDF in Kerala was primarily a resounding rejection mainly of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's Left Democratic Front (LDF) government in Kerala and Modi's dictator rule in the centre.

Factors in Thrissur

In Thrissur, the BJP candidate Suresh Gopi's victory can be attributed to his long-term efforts in the constituency and a unique appeal to religious sentiments. Gopi's offering of a golden crown to the Holy Virgin Mother and his compassionate work in the area garnered significant local support especially that of the Christian community which was UDF vote bank. His victory was not at all a reflection of Modi's influence but rather a recognition of his personal dedication and service to the community.

Mar Raphael Thattil is the 4th Major Archbishop of Syro-Malabar Church

The Synod, comprising all the Bishops of the Syro Malabar Church, convened at Mount St. Thomas, the headquarters on 8 January 2024, with the sole agenda of electing a successor for Mar George Alenchery, who resigned as the Major Archbishop of the Church in November 2023.

On the first day of the Synod was dedicated to prayers and meditation, seeking divine assistance and wisdom from the Holy Spirit. The Bishops earnestly prayed for discernment, pledging to exercise their discretion judiciously, free from any personal sentiments.

Successfully accomplishing their objective on the second day (i.e., yesterday 9-1-2024), the Synod, guided by the Holy Spirit, elected Mar Raphael Thattil as the new Major Archbishop.

The proceedings on the second day of the Synod, which took place on January 9, 2024, resulted in the election of Mar
Thattil as the new head of the Church. The election results had been submitted to the Holy See for approval, and the official announcement was just made at Mount St. Thomas in Kakkanad by Mar Mathew Moolakkattu, the Archbishop of the Kottayam Knanaya Diocese, on behalf of the Syro Malabar Synod.

Mar Raphael Thattil presently serves as the Bishop of the Shamshabad Eparchy, encompassing the largest areas in India.
